First Day of School

It finally came - the first day of school. Hannah has been waiting all week for this. Tyler too, but I think it's interesting that my shy child has been counting down the days until she could go and meet some new friends.

Getting dressed in the morning has never been so easy. What do you think of these uniforms? I've never seen anything like them. Now imagine an entire playground of kids dressed like this! I have no idea how I'll find them at 3:30 this afternoon.

UPDATE: Around lunchtime I got a call from the school principal. All I could think was "which kid is broken...can I find the hospital?" Nope, both kids were great. Phew. The problem was that after some initial assessments this morning, Tyler who by age should be in year 1 is a bit behind in the curriculum. Apparently they were doing some writing about their summer and Tyler approached his teacher to tell her that he was just learning his letters and some words at home. She took his concern seriously and set some wheels in motion right away to have him assessed further. By noon I was getting the phone call asking if we would mind if he was moved back to the "Prep" class?

After some discussion and asking some questions about the Prep program I discovered that it's a mix of senior kindergarten and grade 1 from home. There are more kids Tyler's age there than in year 1 as many parents hold the kids that are younger back a year before they start school. He was treated like a star today, and I can only thank his teachers and the administration for discovering the problem before they had even gotten to lunchtime! I'm so impressed with this school already. So tomorrow is another first day for Tyler!

Hannah had a great day too, she posted some details of her day on her page.

Slippin' and Slidin' in January

The kids wanted to go to the beach.

But Daddy had the car. So we did the next best thing!

Riding a bike in Ferntree Gully

Riding your bike on the side of a mountain appears to be a bit of an art form.

Yesterday we built the kids bikes, and they've been practicing on the driveway.

Today Scott made his first attempt at riding to school. He made it there. He almost didn't make it home. The fact that the trip is almost entirely downhill on the way to school means that it is almost entirely uphill on the way home!

So now (once Scott is suitably hydrated and rested) we're off to see if we can pick up a bike rack for our car. If he can make his way to school in the morning, I can pick him up at the end of the day.

Australia Day at the Melbourne Aquarium

Saturday, January 26th was Australia Day. We decided to take part by heading into Melbourne and taking advantage of the family savings at the Melbourne Aquarium.

Fresh Produce

When Peter told us there would be fresh fruit growing in the backyard I admit I was skeptical. But look what we found!

The kids want to use the lemon for  lemon blueberry muffins. Scott on the other hand wants the limes for his bottles of Corona!

Car Shopping

This is the car that Scott wanted:

This is the car we bought:

It's a 1998 Mazda 121. I can't believe I just bought a 15 year old car. Good grief - we just sold our 1999 Pathfinder for half of what I paid for this!

But this little car has lots of pep, lots of room for bags and a clean bill of health. And just in case a heavy duty 12 month warranty plan :)

Welcome to Driving in Australia

I've been welcomed into the Australian driving culture. While driving through a traffic circle last night I neglected to signal and was immediately reprimanded with a honk and the instruction to "use your bloody blinker".  For the record I did try to signal, however the wipers and the signal are reversed here and I now have the cleanest windshield ever!

Tuesday afternoon we walked to the train station and went into Melbourne to scout out where Scott has to be for a workshop on Thursday and stopped for a snack in one of the many lovely parks we saw throughout the city.

Halfway there....

This morning started off great..

This is what the kids looked like at 8:15 LA time...

And this is what 9:00 looks like...

If you look closely you can see Hannah's foot sticking out.  I thought that they kind of looked like small homeless people.

Just 15 hours to go. We'll post more once we get there.

Are we ready to go?

The short answer? No.

This is what our living room looks like with 8 days to go.

It will all come together. We know that. But take another look at that room… wouldn’t you feel intimidated?
